Tales from my Travels: Here goes yet another road trip across the U.S. but this time we are joined by my brother, sister and sister-in-law. Our final destination? Big Bend National Park. We set off in the afternoon of Christmas Day and stopped to sleep in Sonora. The following morning we visited the magnificent and enchanting Caverns of Sonora with its many diverse formations before setting off again for Alpine, Texas. We arrived at the hotel in the late afternoon/early evening and decided to have dinner in the nearby town of Marfa. While at the Caverns, I had read in a magazine that Marfa was the site of James Dean’s last movie, Giant, and that you could visit and dine in Hotel Paisano where he stayed with his co-stars Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson. While researching restaurants, I looked at the menu of a restaurant called Jett’s Grill and loved it without even realizing at first that it was in fact the hotel’s restaurant. When I did realize, it was decided: we had to have dinner here. After looking around the hotel’s shops and taking a picture with a cardboard figure of James Dean, we entered the restaurant, which was absolutely full at the time. They told us that we could come back at 8:00 (it was 7:25) when they believed a table for six would have finished. We returned at 8:00 but that table had no intention of leaving. The hostess and waitresses apologize profusely and offered us cocktails on the house. Finally, at 8:45, the table finally paid and left. The hostess again apologized and said that the drinks, appetizers and desserts would be on them. We had a magnificent feast. For starters we had Truffle Salt Sweet Potato Fries and the other members of my family also ordered some Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp. As my entrée I ordered a Pistachio-Crusted Fried Portobello Burger with Swiss Cheese. And finally, to finish up the meal, we ordered a delicious piece of Tres Leches Cake with Flambéed Bananas. The restaurant has specially marked gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options. Despite the excessively long wait, I loved the experience. I was entranced by all the Giant memorabilia and all the pictures. I couldn’t believe that I was at a hotel where James Dean had stayed at.
